Let's Get Nuts!- Class and Tasting

$50.00

Nuts are plentiful, and they come wrapped up in a natural tupperware container (the shell). So they are easy to collect and store over winter. They are a nutrient and calorie dense food source that have sustained humans for countless generations.

This class will introduce you to the nuts that were important in the Great Lakes region- acorns, black walnuts, hickory nuts, hazel nuts, and chestnuts. We will take a short plant walk to look at the trees and their habitats, and talk about the various types of acorns and hickories so that you can feel confident gathering nuts on your own. We will discuss the nutritional benefits of the different nuts and then talk about how to collect, store, and process them to make nut milks and nut flours. You will have a chance to work with them hands on, so that you can see the differences between good and bad nuts, try different methods for cracking (it’s not always as easy as using a handheld nutcracker), and learn how to process the acorns and chestnuts to remove the tannins. As part of the class I will also provide at least 15 foods and beverages for you to taste- 3 items with each nut. I wouldn’t call this a meal since it will be a random assortments of foods to taste. There won’t be any sort of coherent main dish and sides, but you won’t leave hungry.

October 18, 4-6pm in the Irish Hills: 900 Twin Lake, Tipton, MI

Ages 13 and over please. We will be both indoors and outdoors for this class, but the walking will not be far or difficult.
